“Supersam + 1” is a series of master performances. The project focuses mainly on music, however, it also includes other forms of expression such as: performance, multimedia, monodrama. “Supersam + 1” will present respected Polish and foreign artists whose work is original, experimental and innovative.
“SUPER” in the title means that the programme will be based on renowned artists – masters.
“SAM” (from Polish, means „alone”, "by himself/herself") refers to the solo performances as well as the creative loneliness.
“+ 1” in the title means that each evening will be crowned with a duo performance. In most cases, the artists will meet on stage for the first time.
The idea of the name “Supersam” in relation to solo concerts was conceived by clarinettist Jerzy Mazzoll, who organised a series of concerts in Plama club in Gdańsk. The place used to be a local self-service grocery shop that was in 80/90’s was called “supersam”.
Later, in 2013, the project under the name “Supersam” was organised in Bydgoszcz in Mózg. In 2015, during the Warsaw part of the 11th Mózg Festival, a part of the programme was a series of solo concerts. The programme was created in a way that each evening contained two solo performances.
An idea was born to match the artists, who have never played together before, in duos. For many of them, meeting on stage was also the first meeting in their lives.
In 2016, the first edition of the project entitled “Supersam + 1” took place. 16 artists presented themselves then. Further 3 editions will be organised in the years 2017-2019.
Each evening includes a performance of one artist from abroad and one from Poland.
All invited artists will present their premiere works that have never been performed before. The duos themselves will also be premieres since the artists will be performing together for the first time and creating the newest possible pieces.
Video recording of all activities and production of documentary films constitute the additional part of the project, which aims at presenting the artists in a close-up.

began her relationship with sound through the cello and voice over 30 years ago and for the past 15 years, her predominant focus has been her solo work, joining together the extended and inherent vocabularies of the voice, cello and analog electronics (with all sounds created without electronic effect or enhancement other than amplification). More recently, she has begun to shift back towards the exploration of the voice as a primary instrument, delving even more deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. American born and currently based in Berlin, Chen has performed across Europe, North/South Americas and Asia. Recent projects, aside from performing solo, include her long running voices duo with Phil Minton, duos Hiss & Viscera with modular synth player Richard Scott, Beam Splitter with Norwegian trombonist Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø, and the “romantic noise duo” Afterburner with Doron Sadja (electronics/light projection).
is an artist, whose music and sound works oscillate between improvised and composed forms. Using acoustic and electronic media, he focuses on such phenomena as time, space, the perception of sound waves. Since 2014 with Zuzanna Fogtt he has been organising Sanatorium of Sound - a festival/platform for experimental and new music. He collaborated with artists such as Keith Rowe, Phil Minton, Ryoko Akama, Lucio Capece, David Maranha, Kasper T. was born in 1963 in Seewinkel, Burgenland. He has taken long and bendy detours and turned to many dead ends, he has spent years without instrumental activity and has made a hopeful new start. All this, those victories and defeats made him the highly profiled musical personality that he is today. Hannibal Marvin Peterson’s concert at Jazzgalerie Nickelsdorf was his “awakening experience”. He studied at the Jazz Department of today’s Art University in Graz from 1981 to 1983 until lip palsy forced him to take a six year total break from trumpeting. After moving to Vienna in 1986 he started in 1989 to explore the trumpet in his very own and un-academic way. He became attached to the circles around Christoph Cech and Christian Mühlbacher, played in the Nouvelle Cuisine Big Band and the octet Striped Roses. A 10 month stay in London provided new ideas and contacts, amongst others Kenny Wheeler, Henry Lowther, John Russel, and Steve Noble. Franz Hautzinger has been teaching at the Vienna Music University since 1989. He has been a member of the Berliner Ensemble “Zeitkratzer” since 1999. He is a globetrotter whose unmistakeable musical signature is known from Vienna to Berlin, London to Beirut, or in Tokyo, New York, and Chicago. Franz Hautzinger has shown that even in times where postmodernism is history an instrument can still be reinvented.
was born in 1983 and is one of the most wanted jazz double bass players in Poland. He has many faces and plays within various genres starting from jazz, through avant-garde to Polish folk music. Thanks to his lightness, easiness and musical erudition he is an interesting and unique musician. He became one of the most recognisable characters of Polish jazz thanks to regular concerts he played in Warsaw’s club Pardon To Tu, where he performed with bands such as Hera or Charles Gayle Trio, in a duo with Wojciecj Jachna or solo. He co-operated with artists such as American pianist Uri Caine, saxophonist Charles Gayle and Michael Zerang, Nicole Mitchell, Marco Eneidi. He also played and recorded with Polish artists including Mikołaj Trzaska, Raphael Rogiński, Wacław Zimpel or band Emergency. He is a member of due Maniucha i Ksawery with Maniucha Bikont and together they play traditional music.
began taking lessons at the age of eight, later he studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Cologne with composers Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Rudolf Petzold. He is one of Europe’s premier free jazz bandleaders, whose music mixes free and contemporary classical elements, with his slashing solos often the link between the two in his compositions. Schlippenbach formed The Globe Unity Orchestra in 1966 to perform the piece “Globe Unity”, which had been commissioned by the Berliner Jazztage. He remained involved with the orchestra into the 80’s. He played with Gunther Hampel in 1963, and was in Manfred Schoof’s quintet from 1964 to 1967. Schlippenbach began heading various bands after 1967, including a trio with Evan Parker and Paul Lovens and a duo with Sven-Ake Johansson, which they co-formed in 1976. Schlippenbach has also given many solos performances. In the late 80’s, he formed the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra,which has featured a number of esteemed European avant-garde jazz musicians including Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Kenny Wheeler, Misha Mengelberg and Aki Takase. In the 90’s he worked in duos with Tony Oxley, Sam Rivers and Aki Takase. In 1999 he started performing and radiorecording the complete works of Thelonius Monk, (all the compositions) with Rudi Mahall and his group „Die Enttäuschung”.
was born and raised in Poznań. Music has flowed through and from him since an early age; his earliest musical memories are of his father playing the piano. Taking up the violin at the age of six, Wacław Zimpel cast aside the frustrations of formal music lessons by finding salvation in jazz, harmonica and a burning desire to improvise. He is one of the most original and unique talents that have emerged from Poland. He is multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer of rare distinction. He is as much inspired by jazz as he is by electronics, minimalism and roots music from across the world. Wacław Zimpel doesn’t so much blur boundaries as eradicate them altogether to create a whole new musical language. His mastery of woodwind instrumentation including the clarinet and the khaen - a proto-harmonica from Laos - has reached world-class levels. A naturally curious musician who refuses to be boxed in, Wacław Zimpel has also applied the endless possibilities of electronics and loops to his oeuvre and, as displayed by his growing catalogue of music, is signposting the way for future generations. He was nominated in 2014 for Paszport Polityki, the most important cultural award in Poland.
is a self-taught guitarist and a composer born in 1957. He is interested in many various sound techniques; he plays all sorts of electric and acoustic guitars; both 6- and 12- string, fretless, baritone, soprano and prepared guitar. In 2014, he founded his artistic company SEVEN SONGS. In the beginning of his career he played with dance orchestras and folk bands. Later he founded his own bands and started playing with Daniel Humair, Michel Portal, Joachim Kühn, Henri Texier, David Friedman, Larry Schneider, Andy Emler, Adam Nussbaum, Didier Lockwood. He played concerts and festivals in Germany, France, Italy, Japan, India and Africa. In 1986 he became a member of the first Orchestre National de Jazz (directed by François Jeanneau).
is an award-winning Polish trumpeter and composer settled in Scandinavia. With eight albums released under his own name and dozens of CDs as a co-leader and sideman, he is considered one of the most gifted trumpeters and composers in Europe. Tomasz has mostly been known for his work with groups TOM TRIO (nominated for the Fryderyk Award - Polish Music Industry Award), FREE4ARTS, OCEAN FANFARE, his Japanese quartet AD HOC, string of concerts S-O-L-O: 30th Birthday / 30 Concerts / 30 Cities and projects with Tomasz Stańko, Tyshawn Sorey and Marilyn Mazur. Tomasz is a member of a Danish musician-run collective and record label Barefoot Records. Tomasz Dąbrowski has always been rejecting the conventions of lineup choice: starting with a trio without a harmonic instrument, forming a duo with drums and a trio with piano and drums, playing solo trumpet concerts. Tomasz is always looking for new sounds, textures and forms, proving that the unconventional has its peculiar colour and is beautiful in its own way. is an experimental sound artist, radio artist, improviser, performer, and self-taught researcher. She has been working and living in Berlin since 2007. In the past fourteen years her sonic work has focused on recorded sound from the external world using a wide array of devices, microphones, sensors, ultrasonic, digital and analogue recorders. In the past four years she has also included antennas, radio receivers, and detectors. She works without boundaries and with many unconventional techniques. Her influences and interest is the sonic environment, acoustic ecology, cosmic energies, electro-smog (radio waves communication, EMF), Natural Radio VLF (electromagnetic signal emissions which originate from natural phenomena, weather, lighting, borealis aurora and more) and they relations and effects on human senses and body. With all the recordings she has captured around the world, she builds highly narrative and visionary soundscapes. Through live performances the sound material is transformed and placed into other contexts, consequently changing its original character by creating a distinct aurality into another universe of sound. She aims to stimulate critical thinking, awareness, memories and auditory imagination of the audience.
was born in 1982 in Warsaw. He is a pianists and a composer. He graduated from the Music Academy in Warsaw. His music combines jazz improvisation with sonorism, heavy metal and electronics and all of that is topped with a good sense of humour. As a musician he is very flexible and versatile, which is reflected in the number of bands he is a member of: LXMP, Efekt Moozgu, Trylobit, 60 Minut Projekt, The Kurws, Blast Muzungu, SEMAFOR COMBO. He worked with leading avant-garde musicians such as Yoshida Tatsuya, Zdzisław Piernik, Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Ove Volquartz, Tabata Mitsuru.
is a composer and performer. He has been internationally acclaimed for both his solo and ensemble music, presented for the past 33 years on 5 continents. He performs primarily on alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, and the shakuhachi - an endblown Japanese bamboo flute. His solo work utilizes an expanded palette of sonic language, creating a kind of personal idiom on its own. In an ensemble setting, he leads the trio Sync, with Jerome Harris (guitars) and Samir Chatterjee (tabla), works with the Mivos string quartet playing his Quintet for Clarinet and Strings and collaborates around the world with fellow improvisors. Recent recordings include this Quintet, The World of Odd Harmonics, Ryu Nashi (new music for shakuhachi), and Inner Diaspora, all on John Zorn's Tzadik label, as well as Live at Roulette with Evan Parker, and The Fell Clutch, on Rothenberg’s Animul label.
is a drummer and composer born in 1980in Warsaw. He studied at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. As an interpreter of music his repertoire includes pieces by 20th and 21st centuries composers. Besides his classical education and cooperation with symphony orchestras, he played with jazz bands, exploring the secrets of improvisation, experimental and world music. He is a co-founder of Warsaw-based indie bands: Piętnastka (with Piotr Kurek), Slalom, jazz trio LAM (along with Wacław Zimpel and Krzysztof Dys) and the Pilokatabaza percussion duo (with Pawel Szpura); he is also involved in a number of projects combining contemporary music and improvisation. His last releases are "Kreatura" with Hungarian avant-garde pianist and composer Szabolcs Esztényi and cassette albums "Melatony" and "Groove 8". He collaborated with artists such as John Tilbury, Jon Gibson, Evan Ziporyn, Gyan Riley, Agusti Fernandez, Felix Kubin, Tod Barton, Mitch & Mitch, Raphael Rogiński, Wacław Zimpel.
has been working in the jazz and improvisation scene in Sweden for many years with a number of groups. Currently she works with pianist Lisa Ullén. She started doing solo performances in 1992, often working with dancers. Her three solo albums Archipelago, 2 and Three have all been critically acclaimed and she has, on several occasions, been nominated for the Swedish Jazz Celebration and received the 2012 Jazz Musician of the Year Award. In addition to this she has been awarded funds from the Swedish Arts Grant on several occasions.
was born in Częstochowa, Poland. He began his musical education at the age of 6. At first, he played the piano and later switched to the clarinet. Both his musical family and community focused around Tie Break band, where his father plays, had a huge impact on his development. He chose saxophone as his main instrument after his father. At the age of 17 he started playing in trumpeter Antoni Gralak's band and since then he has been continuously functioning as a musician. His musical foundation consists of improvised and experimental music, contemporary jazz, nevertheless, he is open and draws from any musical genre; as demonstrated by his cooperation with hip hop, electronic, rock and pop artists. He graduated from the Music Academy in Cracow. He is the leader of his own quartet (with Elias Stemeseder, Maks Mucha and Max Andrzejewski), which released an album "Marek Pospieszalski gra piosenki, które śpiewał Frank Sinatra". Together with Tomasz Sroczyński he recorded and released an album "Bareness". He plays in a duo with Qba Janicki called Malediwy. He is a member of Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet, Kuba Płużek's quartet and Mateusz Pospieszalski's quintet.
was born in 1964 in Köln, Germany. At the age of nine he started playing piano, at the age of eleven playing trumpet in a local music school. He studied trumpet with Jon Eardley in Köln and piano at the conservatory in Arnhem, The Netherlands, then from 1989–1994 piano and trumpet (with Malte Burba) at the Musikhochschule in Köln. He is one of the most unique voices in free improvisation. He developed a completely different language for the trumpet in the late 1990s. Most of the ensembles he is part of are characterized by a non-hierarchical collaboration of the musicians involved. He is mainly associated with musicians and communities of Berlin, London, Chicago as well as New York. At this time his discography consists of more than 150 CDs / LPs. Since 2000 has has been playing extended concert tours on all five continents which led to a worldwide genre-comprehensive musical network with the most distinguished musicians of our time.
is a clarinettist, composer and music teacher born in 1977. He graduated from the Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw. Since 1998, he has been composing music for various instrumental ensembles (Zróżnicowanie for two bassoons and clarinet, Rondo à la Krakowiak for screaming pianist and bass clarinet, Malowanie for two clarinets, bassoon, contrabassoon and singing, Suite in Jewish Style for clarinet, violin and double bass, cycles of works inspired by world languages for violin, clarinet and cello) as well as theatre music (around 25 plays for drama and puppet theatres). He is active as an improviser and modern music performer. He is also the author of installations, theoretical writings, radio features, and underground films. Since 2002, he has been a member of Kwartludium ensemble, specialising in modern music performance. Since 2008, he has worked on extending the sound of the bass clarinet, inspired by beatbox and in cooperation with one of the leading Polish beatboxers, Patryk Matela a.k.a. Tik Tak. He has coined the term of “composed education.” He received grants for the creation of alternative educational manuals. Since 2013, he has been running a project entitled Music for Languages, writing original music for the Yiddish language (CD published by Multikulti Records), Japanese poetry (CD published by Fortune Records), and Persian poetry by Jalāl ad-Dīn Rūmī.
